In distance learning comprehension of reading material can be difficult, add in retention and FORGET IT.
One of the best ways to digest and understand information is by using the SQ3R technique. These techniques very with different ways in which to help remember information.
Survey- Before diving into any reading material whether it be books, articles or web based information, first skim through and see how they have complied the material. What visual aids did they use? ( Graphics, charts, photos)
Question- Ask yourself fact finding questions, this will help you identify points in the reading. What do you know about this topic? What are you hoping to learn from this reading?
Read- After reading the text, answer the questions you have written. If confused on reading matter take a break, come back and re-read the information.
Recite- Most individuals learn best through repetition. Read the text aloud several times. You could also construct an outline of material, make list or short notes for flash cards.
Review- Refer back to your notes frequently throughout the course or your class. This will help keep the information fresh in your mind.
There are many ways in which to remember the information you read. Taking advantage of these tips will strengthen your ability to retain information and making assignments easier to complete.
